Lily Loves You 🡦

The french band Edgar Mauer asked me to create a music video for their song Lily Loves You, a journey about sharing your feelings, accepting your weaknesses and finding resilience in life to move on. The project was a long process of pushing my boundaries, finding the right way to develop a visual storytelling that would embody the meaning behind the lyrics.

Lily Loves You is a song about emotions, understanding them and accepting the way they shape your personality and your life. I've developed the visual concept and storytelling around this duality, defined by the verses for depressing phases, and the chorus for the euphorical ones.

I've spent half of the time on this project developing the visual concept and storytelling. I tried a lot of different styles and didn't want to fit into graphic trends and focus on the lyrics behind the song. Mind maps and quick sketches were my best friends to develop visuals filled with symbolism and meaning.

I tried a lot of different styles to find one that would fit with the song's mood. This led to many storyboards that told the same story each in their own way. It's interesting to think about how the movie could have been.

Overall, it was important to keep a dreamlike atmosphere without losing the viewer into something too abstract and unapproachable. That's why it quickly seemed crucial to keep the story between two individuals that would evolve together.

Graphically speaking, I wanted to give the video clip a frame-by-frame vibe without spending the time usually spent on traditionally animated movies.

While many sequences were still made in classical cell animation, a lot of elements, like the characters, the buildings, the squares or the circles were made with one-second loops of ten different drawings in Photoshop, composing and animating it afterwards in After Effects.

My goal with the music video was to let the viewer full of questions and keep intimacy about the real meaning behind the song.

It was very interesting to ask my entourage about the clip and hear all the different interpretations about the movie.

I am very grateful to Maëva and Alain, the band's musicians, for their patience as I did a lot of writing, sketching and animation that didn’t make it into the final version.

I've spent so much time on concept and storytelling because it was crucial for the band and me to mirror the feelings brought by the song into the visuals.
